This evocative image depicts a pivotal moment from the New Testament of the Bible, as recorded in the Gospel of Mark (5:1-20). In the scene, Jesus of Nazareth stands before a tormented man, who is in the grip of a demonic possession. The man, once known as Legion, is shown with sunken eyes, disheveled hair, and a wild, desperate expression. He is surrounded by a large herd of pigs, which have been driven out of a nearby cliff by the demons that possess him. The historical context of this event is significant, as it is one of the most dramatic and well-known miracles attributed to Jesus during his ministry. According to the biblical account, the man had been living among the tombs outside the city of Gerasa, in the region of the Decapolis. For a long time, he had been unable to live among people due to his extreme condition, and was feared by all. But when Jesus arrived, he approached the man with compassion and authority, commanding the demons to leave him in the name of God. The demons, recognizing Jesus as the Son of God, begged to be allowed to enter a herd of pigs instead. Jesus granted their request, and the demons exited the man and entered the pigs, causing them to rush down the steep bank and drown in the lake below. The freed man, now restored to his right mind, was clothed and brought to Jesus, who welcomed him into the community of believers. This powerful image captures the intensity and transformative power of Jesus' ministry, as well as the awe and wonder that it inspired in those who witnessed it.
