EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print captures the regal elegance and charm of Louis XV, the Beloved King of France, who reigned from 1715 to 1774. Born in 1710, Louis XV succeeded his great-grandfather, Louis XIV, at the tender age of five, and was raised under the regency of his mother, the Duchess of Orleans, and his minister, Cardinal Fleury. As he grew older, Louis XV began to assert his own authority, and his reign was marked by a period of relative peace and prosperity. He was known for his love of the arts, and his court was a center of culture and refinement. The King himself was an accomplished musician and a patron of the arts, and he was known for his wit and charisma. This print, which dates from the period of Louis XV's reign, captures the monarch in the prime of his life. He is depicted in a sumptuous robe of deep blue velvet, adorned with gold braid and ermine trim, and he wears the diamond-encrusted Order of the Holy Spirit on his chest. His expression is serene and confident, and his piercing gaze seems to penetrate the very soul of the viewer. Despite his many accomplishments, Louis XV's reign was not without its challenges. France faced economic difficulties, and the Seven Years' War drained the royal treasury. The King's personal life was also the subject of scandal, as he was rumored to have numerous mistresses, including the infamous Madame de Pompadour. But despite these challenges, Louis XV remained a beloved figure to his people, and he is remembered today as a symbol of the grandeur and elegance of the French monarchy in the 18th century. This stunning print serves as a testament to his enduring legacy, and a reminder of the rich history and culture of France during the Age of Enlightenment.
