EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph captures the moment when American investigator Harry Houdini, famed for his magic and escape acts, exposes the alleged supernatural abilities of Polish medium Stanislawa Tomczyk during a levitation demonstration in 1910. In the image, Tomczyk, dressed in a flowing white robe, appears to levitate a glass tumbler above a table, surrounded by an eager audience. However, Houdini, who was skeptical of spiritualism and mediumship, had previously challenged Tomczyk to perform her levitation act under controlled conditions. In this instance, Houdini had arranged for the room to be filled with bright light, making it impossible for any deceitful means to go unnoticed. As seen in the photograph, Tomczyk's feet are in contact with the table, and her robe is billowing due to a fan placed nearby. Houdini had also placed a metal plate under the table to prevent any hidden wires or magnets from assisting in the levitation. Despite these precautions, Houdini was able to reveal the method behind Tomczyk's seemingly supernatural act. He later explained that she had used her feet to press down on an inverted glass dish, creating an air suction that lifted the tumbler. This revelation left the audience stunned and marked a significant moment in the ongoing debate about the authenticity of spiritualism and mediumship. This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, is a fascinating historical record of the investigation into the paranormal and the skepticism that challenged the beliefs of many during the early 20th century.
