Plate 37: Nectarinia minima, or Crimson-backed Sunbird, is depicted in this stunning watercolor illustration by Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn from her collection "Neilgherry birds and Miscellaneous," published in 1858. The small, elegant bird is shown perched gracefully on a curved branch, its crimson-hued back and rump contrasting sharply with its black wings and tail. The long, curved bill of the sunbird is clearly visible, a distinctive feature of the Nectarinia genus, which is adapted for extracting nectar from flowers. The Crimson-backed Sunbird, also known as Leptocoma minima or Nectarinia minima, is a passerine bird belonging to the family Nectariniidae. This bird is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, and is commonly found in open woodlands, gardens, and forest edges. The male and female of the species exhibit distinct differences in plumage, with the male displaying the bright crimson back and rump, while the female has a duller, olive-green back.
