EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts three beautifully intricate and vibrant birds native to the eastern United States: the Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus), Bay-breasted Warbler (Setophaga castanea), and Chestnut-sided Warbler (Setophaga pensylvanica). The illustration is a faithful reproduction of an ornithological drawing by the renowned naturalist John James Audubon, as featured in Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania, published in Harrisburg in 1890. The Carolina Wren, depicted in the foreground, is the largest and most widespread of the wren species in North America. Its distinctive white eyebrow and red crown are prominently displayed in this image. The Bay-breasted Warbler, shown in the middle, is a migratory songbird with distinctive chestnut flanks and a bold black mask. The Chestnut-sided Warbler, illustrated in the background, is easily identified by its chestnut stripes and black mask, as well as its bright yellow underparts. The intricacy and detail of the illustration are a testament to the skill and dedication of the artists and printers of the time. The use of chromolithography, a color printing process that was popular during the 19th century, allowed for the vibrant and lifelike representation of these birds. This print serves as a reminder of the rich natural history and artistic heritage of the United States.
