EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages," showcases an exquisite collection of classical musical instruments. The image, published by Chez Collignon in Metz, France, in 1810, transports us back in time to the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. The musical instruments depicted in this print include various lyres, such as lyres 1 and 2, which were popular stringed instruments in ancient Greece. Lyre 1 features a flat soundbox and a long, curved neck, while lyre 2 boasts a more compact design. Plectrum 3 and cithara 4 represent the plectrum zither and the ancient Greek harp, respectively. The lute 5, a pear-shaped stringed instrument, was widely used during the Renaissance period. Percussion instruments, such as 6, 7, 8, and 15, include the tympanum, cymbals, and various drums, adding rhythm and intensity to the music. Pan pipes 9, a traditional wind instrument, are shown in the hands of a musician, while crotales 11, a set of tuned metal plates, add a bright, metallic sound to the composition. Brass instruments, such as the tuba 12 and horn 18, were used for both military and musical purposes. Flutes 10, 14, and 19, made from various materials like wood, bone, and silver, produce melodic tones. Triangle 16 and cymbals 17 provide sharp accents, while the trochus or metal hoop 20 and caestus or boxing gloves 21, 22, add an intriguing element to the scene, hinting at the connection between music and athletics. Accessories like writing paper 23, a wallet 24, scrolls 25, 26, 27, stylus or pen 28, calamus or quill 29, and inkwell 30, are included in the print, emphasizing the importance of music in daily life and artistic expression during ancient and medieval times.
