EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving depicts the majestic Corsican Mouflon, Ovis aries musimon, also known as the Corsican Musmon or Oriental Mouflon. The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library, published in Edinburgh in 1836. The illustration was meticulously created by James Stewart and beautifully engraved by Lizars. The Corsican Mouflon is an endemic subspecies of wild sheep native to the Mediterranean island of Corsica. With their distinctive curved horns, thick, shaggy coats, and striking facial markings, these magnificent animals are a testament to the incredible biodiversity of the natural world. The Corsican Mouflon once roamed freely throughout the island, but due to hunting and habitat loss, their population dwindled significantly. Conservation efforts have since been implemented to protect and preserve this rare and beautiful species. Today, the Corsican Mouflon can be found in various protected areas, including the Réserve Naturelle de l'Agriate and the Réserve Naturelle de Cap Corse. This stunning engraving not only showcases the beauty and uniqueness of the Corsican Mouflon but also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the world's natural wonders for future generations to enjoy. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the engraving capture the essence of this magnificent creature, making it a true work of art.
