In this 19th century image, an English gentleman named Jack Bunting, dressed in a formal hunting attire, is shown in a moment of despair as he tries to revive his fallen horse during a fox hunt. The horse, an old nag, lies on the ground, its body weakened by the rigors of the chase. A woodman in a smock and boots, perhaps the groom or gardener, rushes to assist, his expression a mixture of concern and determination. The scene takes place in a picturesque English countryside, with a lady on a side-saddle pony approaching the incident from the distance. The bloodied and mud-splattered riders and their horses, set against the backdrop of a windmill and a tree, evoke the raw energy and excitement of the hunt. The illustration, titled "Mr Bunting's Shocking Bad Horse," was created by the renowned English caricaturist and illustrator, John Leech, in 1860. Leech was best known for his work with Punch magazine, and his humorous and comical style is evident in this hand-coloured steel engraving.
