This evocative photograph captures the intensity and complexity of the Kaffir Wars, a series of nine conflicts between the British and various African communities in South Africa, which took place between 1779 and 1879. The image depicts a moment during the Xhosa War of 1850-1853, as British soldiers, led by their officers, charge towards a native position.
