EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Lady Sheila Milbanke, nee Chisholm, at her home in Mullaboden, County Kildare, with her sons, Lord Loughborough (Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, 1893-1929) and the Hon. Peter St. Clair-Erskine (b. 1921). Lady Milbanke, an Australian-born aristocrat, was the wife of Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, Lord Loughborough, at the time this image was taken in 1931. Sheila's past was marked by controversy when she was romantically linked with Albert, Duke of York (later King George VI) in 1920, while she was still married to Lord Loughborough. However, her first marriage ended in 1929, and she later married Sir John Milbanke in 1934 and, in 1954, Prince Dmitri Romanoff. The family is seen enjoying a leisurely day at Mullaboden, with Lady Milbanke and her sons engaging in a friendly tennis match. The image offers a glimpse into the elegant and refined world of high society during the early 20th century. The beautiful countryside setting of Mullaboden serves as the perfect backdrop for this charming family portrait.
