EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures Margaret Henderson Kidd, the first woman to be briefed as a barrister at the prestigious House of Lords in 1926. Born to Mr. James Kidd, a former Member of Parliament for Linlithgowshire, Margaret broke new ground in the male-dominated legal profession. Her groundbreaking achievement came at a time when women's rights and gender equality were beginning to gain momentum. Margaret's journey to becoming a barrister was not an easy one. She faced numerous challenges and obstacles, including being denied entry to the Inner Temple, one of the Inns of Court, due to her gender. However, her determination and perseverance paid off, and she was eventually admitted to the Bar in 1922. In 1926, Margaret made history by being briefed at the Bar of the House of Lords, marking a significant milestone in the fight for women's rights and gender equality in the legal profession. Her achievement paved the way for future generations of women lawyers and inspired countless young girls to pursue careers in law. This photograph is a testament to Margaret's courage and determination, as well as a reminder of the progress that has been made in women's rights and gender equality in the legal profession over the past century. Margaret Henderson Kidd's legacy continues to inspire and motivate women lawyers today, and her groundbreaking achievement remains an important part of legal history.
