EDITORS COMMENTS
November 1940: A New Leadership for the Home Guard - Major General T R Eastwood, the New Director General of the Home Guard, is seen here in a portrait photograph taken at the Headquarters of the Home Guard. Major General Eastwood, who had previously served as Commandant at Sandhurst and lately commanded a Regular division, assumes his new role at a critical time in the nation's defense. He is pictured here with Captain Henry Thomas Hamilton Foley, likely a senior officer under his command. The Home Guard, also known as the Local Defense Volunteers (LDV), was formed in May 1940 in response to the threat of a German invasion. With the country under threat and the Regular Army stretched thin, the Home Guard played a vital role in protecting key locations and defending against potential enemy attacks. This photograph captures a moment of transition and new leadership in the Home Guard during the tumultuous 1940s.
