This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Appartement d'un ministre de la Porte" or "The Apartment of an Ottoman Official," offers a captivating glimpse into the private quarters of an Ottoman dignitary during the late 18th century. The room is adorned with rich textiles, including a large, intricately patterned carpet that covers the floor, and the walls are decorated with ornate panels and hanging tapestries. Two Ottoman officials, dressed in flowing robes and turbans, sit on a divan, engaging in conversation. The elegant setting suggests a relaxed and leisurely atmosphere, as the men enjoy their time away from the bustling public sphere. In the foreground, a woman, dressed in the traditional attire of a Mahometane dame, spins yarn and embroideres, while a servant attends to a hookah pipe. The use of the hookah pipe, a popular form of smoking in the Ottoman Empire, further emphasizes the leisurely and refined nature of the scene.
