EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the apotheosis, or divine ascension, of Emperor Antoninus Pius and his wife Faustina. The scene is taken from the intricately detailed bas-relief on the Column of Antoninus Pius, erected in Rome around 161 AD to commemorate the reign of this beloved emperor. In the center, a winged genius, symbolizing divine inspiration, carries the imperial couple to the heavens. The emperor, dressed in traditional Roman attire, is shown wearing a laurel wreath, signifying his victories and divine favor. Faustina, dressed in a elegant toga, holds a veil over her head, a customary gesture of respect for the gods. To the left, the Campus Martius, a large military training ground, is depicted with an obelisk, a common symbol of imperial power. At the right, Roma in armor sits on a throne, holding a shield that bears the image of Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. The background of the engraving showcases various architectural structures, including granaries, towers, and the Trajan's Column, further emphasizing the grandeur and prosperity of the Roman Empire during the reign of Antoninus Pius. This beautiful illustration is from Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1843. The meticulous attention to detail in the engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the ancient Roman world and the historical fashion and art of the time.
