EDITORS COMMENTS
This original Royal Navy typewritten message dates back to May 23, 1941, and provides insight into the movements of the German battleship Bismarck and a Hipper Class cruiser as they left the port of Bergen to participate in one of the most significant naval battles of World War II. The message, which reads "Bismarck and Hipper Class cruiser which were anchored in the vicinity of Bergen at 13.30 on Wednesday were reported 18.00 yesterday to have left," was sent at 0946 P.L. (Political Liaison) on May 23, 1941, and marked "Full." The Bismarck, a formidable German battleship, and a Hipper Class cruiser had been anchored in Bergen, Norway, on May 22, 1941. By the following day, they had set sail, initiating a massive naval hunt that would last several days and culminate in the sinking of the Bismarck on May 27, 1941. This rare and authentic document comes from the personal collection of a relation who served on the Aircraft Carrier HMS Victorious during the hunt for the Bismarck. HMS Victorious played a small role in the battle, but one of its aircraft managed to hit the German battleship with a torpedo. The document's provenance adds to its historical significance, providing a tangible connection to this pivotal moment in World War II history. The typewritten message is a testament to the meticulous record-keeping and communication efforts of the Royal Navy during wartime. Its discovery offers a unique glimpse into the strategic maneuvers and intelligence gathering that took place during this critical period in the conflict between the Allied and Axis forces.
