The gun could fire shrapnel, case shot or an explosive 11.56lb. shell and was considered highly accurate. Situated near the Royal Dockyard, Woolwich first changed from a storage depot to a munitions factory at the end of the 17th century. The Armstrong Rifle factory was opened around 1858. Date: 1862
