The date was September 25, 1792, marking a significant turning point in the French Revolutionary Wars. The image portrays a somber procession of French soldiers, led by General Jean-Baptiste Joubert, entering the city gates. The citizens of Chambery, many of them weeping, look on in despair as their once-proud city succumbs to the invading forces. The Alps in the background serve as a stark reminder of the rugged terrain that had long protected the principality from external threats. The fall of Chambery was a result of the French Revolutionary Army's relentless advance, which had begun in August 1792, when the French captured the fortified town of Fort-l'Écluse, effectively cutting off the principality's access to Italy.
