EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the joyous moment of homecoming for a group of New Zealand soldiers and their English brides as they embarked on the SS Remuera for their journey back to New Zealand in 1919. The First World War had brought these couples together, as the soldiers, having served their country bravely, met and fell in love with English women while stationed in Britain. In some cases, these unions resulted in the birth of children and babies, who are also seen in this image, adding to the poignant scene. The end of the war and the demobilisation process saw many soldiers choosing to emigrate with their new families, starting a new life in their homeland. This historical photograph is a poignant reminder of the human stories behind the larger narrative of the Great War, and the enduring bonds formed in the most unexpected of circumstances.
