EDITORS COMMENTS
1962: A United States Navy McDonnell F3H-2N Demon, registration number 136981 (MSN 166, base code NJ, call sign 135), assigned to VF-121, taxis at Naval Air Station Miramar in California. The Demon, a twin-engine, all-weather fleet defense fighter, is armed with both AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missiles. This particular aircraft served in the US Navy fleet until 1964, when it was struck off charge and ultimately scrapped at Naval Air Facility Litchfield Park in Arizona on October 30. The F3H-2N Demon was a formidable aircraft during the Cold War era, providing essential defense capabilities for the US Navy's carrier-based fleet. Its advanced radar systems and missile armament made it a valuable asset in the defense of US interests during a time of heightened tensions. This photograph, taken in 1962, captures the Demon in its prime, ready for action.
