EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite marble sculpture, created by the renowned Greek artist Praxiteles around 330 BC, depicts the god Hermes in the act of carrying the infant Dionysus to the care of nymphs. The image captures a tender moment between the god of commerce, travel, and thieves, and the god of wine, fertility, and theater. According to Greek mythology, Hermes was entrusted with the task of delivering Dionysus to the nymphs of the Nysa Mountains for their protection and upbringing. Praxiteles masterfully conveys the delicate balance between the god's muscular strength and the fragility of the infant Dionysus, as well as the deep affection and care that Hermes shows towards the child. This sculpture is a prime example of the artistic achievements of the Classical Greek period and is now on display at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia in Greece, a testament to the enduring legacy of Greek art and mythology.
