EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning black and white portrait captures the elegant and regal presence of Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg, who served as Queen of Hanover from 1866 until her husband's death in 1878. Born on April 14, 1818, in Altenburg, Saxony, Marie was the eldest daughter of Duke Frederick of Saxe-Altenburg and Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In 1853, she married Prince George V of Hanover, who was a grandson of King George III of the United Kingdom and Queen Charlotte. The portrait, taken in December 1903, showcases Marie's refined beauty and poised demeanor. Her piercing gaze and delicate features are accentuated by her intricately styled hair and the elegant lace collar of her blouse. The Princess's regal attire, consisting of a long, flowing gown and a grand sash, further emphasizes her royal status. Marie's reign as Queen of Hanover was marked by her dedication to her husband and her role as a diplomat, representing Hanover at various European courts. She was known for her intelligence, grace, and compassion, and was deeply involved in charitable works. After her husband's death, she lived in exile in Austria until her own passing on January 9, 1907. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the life and legacy of Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg, a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on the history of Hanover and the European monarchy.
