EDITORS COMMENTS
St. Clare on the Isle of Wight: A Royal Retreat This evocative photograph captures the breathtaking beauty and grandeur of St. Clare, a historic mansion nestled near Ryde on the Isle of Wight. Built with castellated architecture, St. Clare boasts extensive grounds and an awe-inspiring view of Portsmouth on the mainland. The estate, which was once the family seat of the Vernon-Harcourt family, was a popular destination for royalty, particularly Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In July 1862, St. Clare played host to a very special occasion. Princess Alice, the Queen's eldest daughter, and her new husband, Prince Louis of Hesse, chose the estate as their honeymoon destination following their wedding at Osborne House. The newlyweds' decision to begin their married life at St. Clare was a fitting one, as the estate had long been a favorite of the royal family. The photograph, taken in 1862, captures the essence of a bygone era. The mansion, with its imposing structure and picturesque surroundings, stands as a testament to the opulence and elegance of the Victorian era. Although St. Clare house has since been demolished, this image remains a precious reminder of the rich history and royal connections that once made it a cherished retreat.
