EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hauntingly beautiful monochrome print, the figure of Saint Susanna, a revered virgin and martyr of the early Christian Church, stands resolute in the face of persecution. Saint Susanna, believed to have lived during the third century, was a young woman of exceptional beauty who refused the advances of Emperor Diocletian's son-in-law, Maximian. Infuriated by her refusal, Maximian ordered her father, a priest, to be arrested along with her and brought before the emperor. Despite the threat of torture and death, Susanna remained steadfast in her faith and her commitment to chastity. The emperor, determined to break her resolve, ordered her to be stripped and exposed in the public baths, hoping that the sight of naked men would tempt her. But Susanna's purity remained unshaken, and she was sentenced to death for her defiance. In this print, Susanna is depicted as a young woman of great beauty and dignity, her eyes downcast and her hands folded in prayer. She is shown standing before a backdrop of swirling clouds and dark, ominous skies, symbolizing the turmoil and danger that surrounded her. The image is a powerful reminder of the strength and courage that can be found in the face of adversity, and the importance of remaining true to one's beliefs, even in the face of persecution. The print, which is available through Mary Evans Prints Online, is a stunning example of the power of monochrome photography to evoke emotion and convey meaning. The use of light and shadow, as well as the intricate details of Susanna's clothing and the textured background, add depth and complexity to the image, making it a must-have for any collection of religious or historical art. Whether used as a decorative piece or as a source of inspiration, this print is sure to captivate and move anyone who encounters it.
