EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph taken in the late 1960s, two women pause to contemplate the statues in Moscow's Muzeon Sculpture Park. At the center stands a towering figure of Felix Dzerzhinsky (1877-1926), a Polish-Russian revolutionary and the first head of the Soviet secret police, the Cheka. Dzerzhinsky's stern expression and clenched fists embody the ideological fervor of the Soviet era. To the right, another statue lies on its side, its identity obscured by the women's presence. While it is not immediately clear, this fallen statue is believed to be of Josef Stalin (1879-1953), the Soviet Union's infamous leader from 1924 to 1953. The image of Stalin, with his characteristic mustache and stern gaze, was a ubiquitous presence in Soviet society during this period. The Muzeon Sculpture Park, established in 1957, is a unique open-air museum that showcases a diverse collection of Soviet sculpture. This photograph captures a moment in history when the Soviet Union's past was still raw and contested, and the meaning of its monuments was far from settled. The women in the photograph, their faces expressionless, seem to embody the complexities and contradictions of Soviet society during this era. The fallen statue of Stalin serves as a poignant reminder of the tumultuous history and shifting political landscape of the Soviet Union. This photograph invites us to reflect on the role of public monuments in shaping our collective memory and understanding of history.
