Home Decor from Mary Evans Picture Library
Surgeons Hall
The Company of Surgeons moved from Surgeons Hall in Old Bailey to a site at 41 Lincolns Inn Fields in 1797. Construction of the first College building, to a design by George Dance the Younger, and James Lewis, took from 1805 to 1813. In 1833 Sir Charles Barry won the public competition to design a replacement. The library and portico of this building are all that remain today after a German incendiary bomb hit the College in 1941

EDITORS COMMENTS
Surgeons' Hall, London: A Historical Snapshot of Britain's Oldest Surgical Society This evocative image captures the enduring legacy of Surgeons' Hall in Lincolns Inn Fields, London, a site steeped in history and innovation. Originally located in Old Bailey, the Company of Surgeons moved to this new location in 1797. The construction of the first College building, designed by George Dance the Younger and James Lewis, commenced in 1805 and was completed in 1813. In 1833, Sir Charles Barry won the public competition to design a replacement for the aging structure. Barry's design, which included a grand library and impressive portico, was completed in stages between 1847 and 1856. However, the College's rich history was not without interruption. During World War II, a German incendiary bomb hit the College in 1941, destroying much of the building. Today, the library and portico remain as the last vestiges of the historic College, standing as a testament to the past and a symbol of the field's enduring progress.
