EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning topographical print captures the Town Hall of Péronne, a historic building that has stood proudly in the heart of the French town since the 16th century. The artwork is a creation of Sir David Muirhead Bone (1876-1953), a renowned Scottish artist who was appointed as Britain's first official war artist in May 1916. At the height of World War I, Bone was commissioned as an honorary second lieutenant and arrived in France during the Battle of the Somme. He served with the Allied forces on the Western Front and also spent some time with the Royal Navy. Bone's artistic talents were put to use during his military service, documenting the war through his paintings and drawings. This print, created during his time in Péronne, showcases his exceptional skill in capturing the architectural details of the town hall, as well as the surrounding landscape. The intricate design of the building's facade, with its ornate windows and intricate carvings, is beautifully rendered in this nautical-style print. The Town Hall of Péronne has a rich history, having served as the seat of local government since the Middle Ages. It has also been the site of significant historical events, including being occupied by the Germans during both World War I and World War II. Today, it stands as a testament to the resilience of the town and its people, and continues to be an important cultural and historical landmark. This print is a valuable addition to any collection of military or topographical art, and a testament to the artistic talents of Sir David Muirhead Bone. His work provides a unique perspective on the history of the First World War and the impact it had on the towns and cities of Europe.
