EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the Turkish Warship, Sultan Selim I, in all its grandeur during the early 20th century. The Sultan Selim I was a Barbaros-class dreadnought battleship, named after the great Ottoman Sultan, Sultan Selim I (1470-1520), who expanded the Ottoman Empire to its greatest territorial extent. The battleship was part of the Turkish Navy's modernized fleet, which saw action during World War I. Built in Germany between 1912 and 1914, the Sultan Selim I was a formidable warship, measuring 161 meters in length and displacing over 20,000 tons. Armed with ten 30.5 cm (12 inches) guns and twelve 15 cm (5.9 inches) guns, the battleship was a powerful force to be reckoned with. Its two funnels belched thick smoke, a testament to the coal-fired engines that propelled the ship through the sea. The photograph was taken during a naval review or battle exercise, likely during the early years of World War I. The battleship is seen here under a clear blue sky, with the sun casting a warm glow over its deck. The water around the ship is calm, and the Turkish flag flies proudly at the stern. The Sultan Selim I saw action during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915, where it played a crucial role in repelling the Allied invasion of the Dardanelles. The battleship continued to serve in the Turkish Navy until the 1950s, when it was eventually decommissioned and broken up for scrap. This photograph is a reminder of the rich naval history of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, and the important role the Sultan Selim I played in defending the nation's territorial waters during a time of global conflict.
