EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the Vickers R 23 British airship, one of only four built at Barrow-in-Furness during World War I. With a crew of 17 men, the R 23 took its maiden flight in September 1917 and was promptly delivered to the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) Airship Station at Pulham in Norfolk. However, it was discovered to be overweight, which limited its operational capabilities. As a result, it was primarily used for training duties. In this image, we see the R 23 undergoing a ground test at Pulham. The airship is being "walked" by a team of ground crew members, who are carefully guiding it along the ground. The intricate design of the airship's structure is evident, as is the attention to detail in the rigging and mooring lines. The scene exudes a sense of precision and discipline, reflecting the meticulous nature of airship operations during this era. The Vickers R 23 was an important part of the British aviation history during the First World War, and its contribution to the development of airship technology should not be underestimated. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating insight into the world of early aviation and the men who bravely operated these magnificent machines.
