Whitby Yorkshire

A photograph purporting to be from the time of the devastating German naval attacks on the Yorkshire coast on 16th December 1914. The two menacing German warships on the horizon do (however) look a little contrived! Date: 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
Beneath the ominous skies of Whitby, Yorkshire, on the chilling December afternoon of the 16th, 1914, two menacing warships loom ominously on the horizon. The once tranquil harbor, now a scene of impending danger, is dotted with small fishing boats that seem insignificant against the monstrous naval vessels. The cliff top and the ruins of Whitby Abbey, standing tall against the backdrop, bear silent witness to the unfolding events. The serene coastal town, known for its picturesque beauty and historic significance, is about to be bombarded and shelled by the German navy in what is now known as the Battle of the Yorkshire Coast. The Great War, which had begun just two months ago, was making its way to the shores of England, bringing with it destruction and chaos. The townsfolk huddled together, their faces etched with fear and uncertainty, as they watched the warships approach. The peaceful town, nestled between the cliffs and the sea, was about to be transformed into a battleground. The photograph, while purporting to be from the time of the attack, does leave one questioning the authenticity of the two warships on the horizon, which appear to be a contrived addition to the scene.
