Octopi are displayed for sale after an auction at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo
Octopi are displayed for sale after an auction at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo September 9, 2006. The market is the worlds largest seafood wholesale market with an annual turnover of $6 billion, and nearly 3, 000 tons and 450 species traded daily by auction. Tokyos bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics proposes to build the media center or the athletes village on the site of the Tsukiji market, which the government has long tried to evict from prime real estate in central Tokyo. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant display of octopi for sale at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. Taken on September 9,2006, this image showcases the incredible variety and abundance of marine life found within the world's largest seafood wholesale market. With an annual turnover of $6 billion, Tsukiji is a bustling hub where nearly 3,000 tons of seafood and 450 different species are traded daily through auctions. The market has been a cornerstone of Tokyo's culinary culture for decades. However, this iconic location faced an uncertain future at the time this photograph was taken. The government had long attempted to evict Tsukiji from its prime real estate in central Tokyo to make way for other developments. In fact, as part of their bid for hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics, Tokyo proposed building either the media center or athletes' village on this very site. The photographer Lucy Nicholson expertly captures both the beauty and significance of Tsukiji fish market in her composition. Through her lens, we witness not only a snapshot of commerce but also a glimpse into Japan's rich maritime heritage and its enduring relationship with seafood.
