A scuba diver swims near a whale shark as it approaches a paddleboat off the beach of Tan-awan, Oslob, in the southern Philippines island of Cebu, March 1 2013. Tan-awan, in the southern Philippines island of Cebu, used to be a sleepy village that never saw tourists unless they were lost or in transit. Yet now they flock there by the hundreds - to swim with whale sharks, the worlds largest fish. Whale sharks are lured to the Tan-awan coastline of the Oslob district by fishermen who hand feed them small shrimp, drawing divers and snorkelers to see the highly sought-after animals, known as gentle giants of the sea. But the practice has sparked fierce debate on the internet and among biologists, who decry it as unnatural. Picture taken March 1, 2013. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, a scuba diver fearlessly explores the depths of the ocean as a magnificent whale shark gracefully approaches a paddleboat off the beach of Tan-awan, Oslob. This once-sleepy village in the southern Philippines has become an unexpected tourist hotspot, attracting hundreds of visitors who yearn to swim with these gentle giants of the sea. The mesmerizing scene captures a unique phenomenon where local fishermen entice whale sharks to the coastline by hand-feeding them small shrimp. As controversy swirls around this practice, biologists and online communities engage in heated debates over its impact on both animal behavior and environmental sustainability. March 1st, 2013 marks an important moment frozen in time through David Loh's lens. The image encapsulates not only the awe-inspiring encounter between man and nature but also raises questions about our responsibility towards preserving marine ecosystems. As viewers gaze at this breathtaking snapshot, they are transported into a world where humans coexist harmoniously with one of Earth's largest creatures. It serves as a reminder that while tourism can bring economic benefits to remote areas like Tan-awan, it is crucially important to strike a balance between satisfying our curiosity and ensuring long-term conservation efforts for these majestic animals. This photograph is part of Reuters Images' collection titled "The Whale Shark Feeders" shedding light on humanity's complex relationship with wildlife and igniting discussions about ethical practices concerning animal encounters.
