Home Decor from Royal Cornwall Museum
Temple, Cornwall. 1964
View from the lane near the church. The top of the castellated tower of which can just be discerned on the lower left of the picture behind a tree. In the middle ground of the picture is Merrifield Farm. To the right of the farm, behind a tree, can be seen the conical spoil tip of Cardinham China Clay Works. The name of this China Clay Works could be a local term as it is sited on the edge of Cardinham Moor. However, it is marked as Glynn Valley China Clay Works (disused) on the O/S six inch map 1907. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, taken in 1964 by photographer Charles Woolf, transports us to the serene countryside of Temple, Cornwall. The view from a quaint lane near the church reveals an enchanting landscape that tells tales of history and industry. In the lower left corner of the picture, barely visible behind a tree, stands the castellated tower of the local church. Its presence adds a touch of mystique to this idyllic scene. As we move towards the middle ground, our eyes are drawn to Merrifield Farm - a charming homestead nestled amidst rolling hills and lush greenery. To the right of Merrifield Farm lies an intriguing sight - peeking out from behind another tree is Cardinham China Clay Works' conical spoil tip. This unique feature hints at Cornwall's rich mining heritage and serves as a reminder of its industrial past. Interestingly enough, while it is referred to as Glynn Valley China Clay Works on older maps like the O/S six inch map from 1907 when it was disused, locals may have known it simply as Cardinham China Clay Works due to its location on Cardinham Moor. This remarkable photograph captures not only picturesque scenery but also provides glimpses into Cornwall's cultural tapestry. It reminds us that even in seemingly remote corners like Temple, traces of history and industry can be found if one looks closely enough.
