Cushion : Lower Lemon Street, Truro, Cornwall. Probably 1911
Home Decor from Royal Cornwall Museum
Lower Lemon Street, Truro, Cornwall. Probably 1911
A view of Lower Lemon Street looking from Lemon Bridge towards Farrows Bank and the Red Lion Hotel in Boscawen Street. The street is decorated with flags and garlands, possibly for the Coronation of George V in 1911, or maybe for the Bath and West Show which was held in Truro in 1913. There are lots of people in the street, looking very well dressed, together with a policeman, and two maids looking out of an upstairs window in the Royal Hotel at 82 Lemon Street. There is also a motor car driving through. The Cathedral can be seen in the background. Photographer: Arthur Philp

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to Lower Lemon Street, Truro, Cornwall, most likely in 1911. The scene is alive with vibrant flags and garlands adorning the street, creating an atmosphere of celebration and joy. It is believed that these decorations were put up either for the Coronation of George V or perhaps for the Bath and West Show held in Truro two years later. The street is bustling with elegantly dressed individuals who have come out to witness this special occasion. Amongst them stands a vigilant policeman, ensuring order amidst the excitement. From an upstairs window at the Royal Hotel on 82 Lemon Street, two maids curiously observe the lively scene below. Amidst all this commotion, a motor car gracefully navigates through the crowd, showcasing early advancements in transportation technology. In the distance stands Truro Cathedral majestically overlooking it all; its spires reaching towards the heavens. Photographed by Arthur Philp, this image captures not only a moment frozen in time but also reflects upon a sense of community spirit and pride that resonated within Lower Lemon Street during such festive occasions. This remarkable piece from Royal Cornwall Museum allows us to appreciate our rich history while reminding us of how celebrations can bring people together across generations.
