Artwork of legs with healthy and varicose veins

Varicose veins. Artwork of human legs showing healthy and varicose veins. Varicose veins are enlarged, tortuous or twisted veins just beneath the skin surface. The three tubes (at left) represent healthy veins. Muscular contractions around the veins cause deoxygenated blood to be pumped up the vein back towards the heart (up arrows). Valves (across the veins) prevent blood from draining back down the leg under the force of gravity. In the varicose veins to the right the valves have become defective so blood is draining downwards (down arrows). This pooling of blood causes the characteristic swelling and distortion

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artwork depicting the intricate details of human legs, specifically focusing on healthy and varicose veins. Varicose veins, as illustrated in this piece, are enlarged and twisted veins that lie just beneath the surface of the skin. The left side of the image displays three tubes representing healthy veins, where muscular contractions aid in pumping deoxygenated blood back towards the heart through an upward flow. However, on the right side of this artistic representation lies a different story. The varicose veins portrayed here have fallen victim to defective valves, causing blood to drain downwards against gravity's force. This downward flow leads to blood pooling within these affected vessels, resulting in characteristic swelling and distortion commonly associated with varicose vein conditions. Through its thought-provoking imagery, this artwork sheds light on an important medical disorder that affects many individuals worldwide. It serves as a reminder of both the complexity and fragility of our circulatory system while emphasizing the significance of maintaining good health care practices. Science Photo Library has once again captured a visually stunning moment that not only educates but also inspires viewers to appreciate both artistry and scientific knowledge intertwined harmoniously within one frame.
