Computer artwork of a humpback whale
Humpback whale. Computer artwork of a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeanliae). It is also known as the singing whale due its elaborate vocalisations. They can weigh up to 26 tonnes and measure up to 15 metres in length. The humpback whales teeth are large plates that hang down from the whales jaws. Humpback whales have up to 360 of these plates which are frayed into bristles on their inner edge. The whale will swallow tons of sea water and then press its tongue against the bristles. This will push out the water and trap the whales prey (plankton) in the bristles of the plates. Humpback whales are found worldwide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This computer artwork showcases the majestic beauty of a humpback whale, known scientifically as Megaptera novaeanliae. Renowned for its enchanting vocalizations, this species is often referred to as the singing whale. With an astonishing weight of up to 26 tonnes and a length reaching 15 meters, these gentle giants command attention wherever they roam. The humpback whale's unique dental structure is another fascinating aspect depicted in this artwork. Rather than traditional teeth, it possesses large plates that hang down from its jaws. These remarkable plates number up to 360 and are frayed into bristles on their inner edge. To capture its prey - plankton - the whale engulfs tons of seawater before pressing its tongue against these bristles, effectively filtering out water while trapping tiny organisms. Humpback whales can be found in oceans across the globe, making them one of nature's most widely distributed creatures. This stunning print not only celebrates their grandeur but also serves as a reminder of our planet's diverse wildlife and the importance of protecting these magnificent beings. Displayed by Science Photo Library, this extraordinary piece combines artistry with scientific accuracy to offer viewers an awe-inspiring glimpse into the world of baleen whales. It serves as a testament to both human creativity and nature's wonders while inviting us all to appreciate and safeguard Earth's largest living animals for generations to come.
