Diademed sifaka

Diademed sifaka (Propithecus diadema) jumping. This arboreal lemur is found in eastern and north-eastern Madagascar. It is one of the largest of the lemurs, with a body length of up to 55 centimetres. It feeds on leaves, seeds, fruits and flowers. All lemurs are endemic to Madagascar, where they evolved in isolation from other primates after Madagascar became geographically isolated from Africa. Many lemur species are becoming increasingly rare due to habitat destruction. Photographed at Vakona Lodge, Perinet Reserve, Madagascar

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the graceful and agile movements of a Diademed sifaka, an arboreal lemur found in the lush forests of eastern and north-eastern Madagascar. With its diadem-like markings on its head, this remarkable primate stands out among its peers. As one of the largest lemurs, it boasts an impressive body length of up to 55 centimeters. Endemic to Madagascar, these lemurs evolved in isolation from other primates after the island became geographically separated from Africa. Unfortunately, many lemur species face a grim future due to habitat destruction caused by human activities. In this image taken at Vakona Lodge within Perinet Reserve in Madagascar, we witness the sheer beauty and natural prowess of this diademed sifaka as it gracefully leaps through the forest canopy. Its nimble limbs allow it to navigate effortlessly between branches while foraging for leaves, seeds, fruits, and flowers. As we admire this stunning creature frozen in mid-air against a backdrop of vibrant green foliage, let us also reflect on our responsibility to protect these unique animals and their fragile habitats. Lemurs are not only symbols of Madagascar's rich biodiversity but also serve as indicators for ecosystem health. It is crucial that we work together to ensure their survival for generations to come.
