Far side of the Moon, Apollo 11

Far side of the Moon, Apollo 11 orbital photograph. NASAs Apollo 11 was the first mission to put a man on the Moon, in July 1969. Whilst orbiting the Moon, the astronauts also viewed the side of the Moon facing away from the Earth, known as the dark side. Gravitational forces have caused the Moons spin to be synchronised with its orbit around Earth, so that the same side is always visible. Many impact craters, the result of collisions with objects in space, are visible. This includes a large, young crater towards the bottom of the image which is probably just several million years old

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a rare glimpse of the far side of the Moon, taken during NASA's groundbreaking Apollo 11 mission in July 1969. As Neil Armstrong and his fellow astronauts orbited our celestial neighbor, they were able to witness the enigmatic dark side that forever faces away from Earth. The image showcases numerous impact craters scattered across the lunar surface, evidence of countless collisions with space debris over millions of years. One particularly striking feature is a large and relatively young crater located towards the bottom of the photograph, believed to be just several million years old. This monochrome snapshot not only serves as a testament to humanity's first steps on another world but also highlights the remarkable achievements made possible by space exploration in the 20th century. The synchronicity between the Moon's spin and its orbit around Earth ensures that this mysterious face remains hidden from our view at all times. As we gaze upon this historic artifact, we are reminded of mankind's insatiable curiosity and relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our own planet. This image stands as a symbol of human ingenuity and serves as an enduring reminder that there is still so much left for us to discover within our vast universe.
