Interior of Tu-144 supersonic airliner

Supersonic flight. Interior of a Tupolev Tu-144 supersonic airliner. The Tu-144, known to NATO as Charger, first flew on 31 December 1968, two months before the Anglo-French Concorde. However, the Tu-144 entered passenger service later than Concorde, on 1 November 1977. Progress was severely affected by the crash of one of the prototypes at the Paris Air Show in 1973. A total of 16 aircraft were built, but between them they only managed 55 passenger flights and a further 47 cargo flights before being withdrawn due to continued safety concerns. Photographed in 1969

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the interior of the iconic Tu-144 supersonic airliner, also known as Charger. The image takes us back to 1969, showcasing the sleek and modern design of this groundbreaking aircraft. Despite being developed before its Anglo-French counterpart, Concorde, the Tu-144 faced numerous setbacks that hindered its progress. The photograph showcases the coach class seating area, highlighting the economy section of the cabin. Rows of comfortable seats are neatly arranged in a spacious layout, offering passengers a glimpse into what was meant to be a luxurious flying experience. However, despite its initial promise, this supersonic marvel became known as a "white elephant". Safety concerns arose after one of its prototypes crashed during an air show in Paris in 1973. This incident significantly impacted public confidence and led to limited passenger flights throughout its operational lifespan. With only 16 aircraft built and just over 100 flights completed - both for passengers and cargo - it is evident that this ambitious project fell short of expectations. Nevertheless, this photo immortalizes an era when aviation pioneers pushed boundaries in their quest for speed and innovation.
