View of an lit electric light bulb
Light bulb. View of a lit electric light bulb. Bulbs produce light from a filament (upper centre), a fine coiled wire of tungsten which heats up and glows as an electric current is passed through it. Tungsten is an ideal material for a filament as it is strong and has a high melting point (3410 degrees Celsius). The interior of the bulb contains an inert gas, usually a mixture of nitrogen and argon. Air cannot be used as the oxygen it contains would corrode the tungsten. Whilst in use, the tungsten filament gradually evaporates away until eventually it breaks

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing glow of a lit electric light bulb. At its core, this technological marvel showcases the brilliance of human ingenuity and scientific progress. The filament, an intricate coiled wire made of tungsten, takes center stage in the upper part of the image. As an electric current courses through it, this resilient material heats up and emits a radiant light that illuminates our world. Tungsten proves to be an ideal choice for the filament due to its exceptional strength and incredibly high melting point - a staggering 3410 degrees Celsius! Within the bulb's interior lies a mixture of nitrogen and argon gases, carefully chosen as inert substances to prevent corrosion on the precious tungsten filament. This deliberate selection ensures longevity and efficiency in producing consistent illumination. However, even with these precautions, over time, we witness nature's inevitable course taking place within this delicate ecosystem. Gradually but surely, as each moment passes by in service to humanity's needs for light energy, the tungsten filament evaporates until it eventually succumbs and breaks. In this still life composition capturing both artistry and science intertwined harmoniously together, Science Photo Library invites us to ponder not only our reliance on electricity but also appreciate how innovation can shape our lives while reminding us that nothing lasts forever - not even something as seemingly eternal as light itself.
