The Extraordinary Weybridge Track - A Marvel of Engineering and Speed

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the awe-inspiring sight of the newly constructed Weybridge Motor Track, set to open on 17 June 1907. Sketched from a bird's-eye view by the talented artist Melton Prior, it showcases the groundbreaking achievement of the Brooklands Automobile Racing Club. With its innovative design, this track is hailed as the first motor track in the kingdom. The slopes of its curves have been meticulously calculated to perfection, allowing an unsteered car traveling at a mind-boggling speed of ninety miles per hour to effortlessly glide along its top with utmost safety. The analogy drawn is that of a pea revolving in a bowl - truly extraordinary! Spanning over three miles per lap, this concrete marvel required an astounding total cost nearing ?100,000. Encompassing 35,000 cubic yards for its construction and featuring a width of 90 feet, it stands as an impressive testament to human ingenuity. Notably, two magnificent bridges were erected over River Wey at an additional expense of ?10,000. These structures add both grandeur and functionality to this exceptional racing circuit. As we gaze upon this historic image depicting motorcycles and cars zooming across this remarkable track like peas in a bowl, we cannot help but be captivated by the sheer excitement and anticipation that must have filled these grounds during those early days of motor racing.
