Sir Robert Walpole was an influential British politician who served as the first Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1721 to 1742. He was born in 1676 in Norfolk, England and was educated at Eton College and Cambridge University. Walpole rose to prominence during the reign of George I, becoming a member of Parliament and eventually serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer. In 1721, he became Prime Minister and held that position for over 20 years. During his tenure, he implemented a number of reforms including reducing taxes on imported goods, increasing government revenue through taxation on luxury items, and establishing public credit by issuing government bonds.
