The series was woven in cooperation between Jan Le Clerc (d. 1677) and Daniel II Eggermans and was therefore almost certainly commissioned by a marchand tapissier who would have owned the designs. Interestingly the designs are based both on Pieter Paul Rubens (d. 1640) and Jacob Jordaens (d. 1678) style.); Photo © Christies Images

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning Brussels tapestry from the 17th century. Created around 1650, this exquisite piece of art is woven in wool and silk by renowned artists Jean Le Clerc and Daniel II Eggermans. The tapestry belongs to a private collection and depicts scenes from "The Story of Theodosius II and the Apple". The set consists of six tapestries, each intricately woven with wools and silks. One tapestry portrays Aelia Eudoxia receiving an apple from a poor man, while another captures Theodosius confronting Aelia Eudoxia with the apple. Additionally, there is a battle scene depicted in one of the tapestries. Each artwork is framed within a fruiting laurel simulated picture frame border and blue outer slip, showcasing remarkable attention to detail. The town mark of Brussels can be seen on all pieces, with two bearing the weaver's signature IEAN. LE. CLERC, one signed D. EGGERMANS, two displaying D. E. , and one partially damaged signature. Although some minor losses are evident in the light silks and blue outer slip due to age, these imperfections do not diminish their beauty. Each tapestry has been consolidated against a linen backing for preservation. Measuring between 6 feet 6 inches (197 cm) to 12 feet 2 inches (370 cm), these magnificent artworks demonstrate both Pieter Paul Rubens' and Jacob Jordaens' influence in their design. This print provides viewers with an opportunity to appreciate the intricate craftsmanship that went into creating these historical masterpieces.
