EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Button, Calcutta Volunteer Lancers from 1872-1881. The button itself is made of white metal and was crafted by Ranken and Company in Calcutta. It features Queen Victoria's Crown above the unit monogram and crossed lances, symbolizing their role as a cavalry regiment. The Calcutta Volunteer Lancers were established in 1872 and served as the precursor to the renowned Calcutta Light Horse. As an auxiliary unit within the Indian Army Cavalry Reserve, they played a vital role in supporting combat operations. However, with India gaining independence in 1947, the Calcutta Light Horse was disbanded. From the Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection at the National Army Museum in London, this print offers a glimpse into India's military history during British colonial rule. It represents not only an army organization but also signifies bravery, dedication, and service to one's country. The image transports us back to a time when troops on horseback patrolled the vibrant city of Calcutta (now Kolkata), protecting its inhabitants while maintaining order. This piece of art captures both Asian ethnicity and British influence seamlessly intertwined within India's rich cultural tapestry. As we admire this historical artifact through Bridgeman Images' lens, let it serve as a reminder of our shared pasts and how far we have come on our journey towards peace and unity.
