EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning piece of history, the Pouch badge of the Madras Volunteer Guards from 1857-1901. Created by the British School in the 19th century, this gilt badge is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The intricate design features a crown above a circlet adorned with the unit's motto, "Ready Aye Ready" encircling its initials, MVG. The Madras Guards originated as a volunteer unit in Calcutta during the tumultuous period of mutiny within the Bengal Army in 1857. Just one year later, they were presented with colors and established themselves financially by 1859. For nearly a decade after that, they remained as southern India's sole volunteer unit until 1868. Originating from Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection, this photograph captures not only an exquisite artifact but also represents an important chapter in Indian military history. It serves as a reminder of bravery and dedication displayed by these volunteers who played their part during challenging times.
