Lord Lucan (mezzotint)
5920000 Lord Lucan (mezzotint) by Grant, Francis (1803-78) (after); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Lord Lucan.
Mezzotint by unknown artist after Sir Francis Grant (1803-78), publisher unknown, 1855 circa.
Lieutenant-General (later Field Marshal) George Charles Bingham, 3rd Earl of Lucan (1800-88) first joined the Army in 1816 and rose rapidly through the purchase of his commissions to command the 17th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons (Lancers) within ten years. He remained in post until 1837 when he went on to half pay; the only active service he had seen was in the Balkans in 1828 as an observer on the Russian staff. Upon the outbreak of the Crimean War (1854-1856) he nevertheless applied for a command and was given the Cavalry Division.
His unfamiliarity with new tactics and general rustiness soon became manifest, a situation made worse by his bad relations with his brother-in-law Lord Cardigan, who commanded the Light Brigade of cavalry under him. His caution moreover earned him the sobriquet Lord Look-On. At the Battle of Balaklava he was a leading player in the chain of events which sent the Light Brigade to its doom, and his subsequent determination to justify himself at the expense of his working relationship with Lord Raglan led to his recall from the Crimea by the government in January 1855.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This mezzotint print showcases Lord Lucan, also known as Lieutenant-General George Charles Bingham, 3rd Earl of Lucan. Created by an unknown artist after Sir Francis Grant in 1855, the print is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. Lord Lucan's military career began in 1816 when he joined the Army and quickly rose through the ranks. By 1826, he commanded the prestigious 17th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons (Lancers). Despite his lack of active service experience, Lord Lucan sought a command during the Crimean War (1854-1856) and was given charge of the Cavalry Division. However, his unfamiliarity with new tactics and strained relationship with his brother-in-law Lord Cardigan led to disastrous consequences. At the Battle of Balaklava, Lord Lucan played a significant role in sending the ill-fated Light Brigade to its doom. His cautious approach earned him criticism and earned him the nickname "Lord Look-On". Moreover, his determination to justify himself at all costs damaged his working relationship with Lord Raglan. As a result of these events, Lord Lucan was recalled from Crimea by the government in January 1855. This mezzotint print captures both his distinguished appearance and hints at some of the challenges he faced during this tumultuous period. The Fine Art Finder collection has made this historical artwork accessible for all to appreciate through Bridgeman Images' reproduction rights while preserving its significance within military history.
