EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Knight of the Order of Constantine in his resplendent ceremonial robes. Created by Christoph Weigel, a renowned engraver from the 17th century, this image captures the essence of tradition and nobility. The knight is adorned in a striking blue mantle that exudes regality, complemented by a pristine white tunic and vibrant scarlet hose. The Order itself dates back to AD 343 when it was founded by Emperor Constantine, with its official rules and statutes established in 1190 by Isaac-Angelus Commenus, Emperor of Constantinople. A prominent feature of this order is its distinctive red cross composed of four fleur-de-lis enclosed within a golden border. This emblem symbolizes honor, chivalry, and dedication to service. Copied from an illustration found in Philipp Bonannis Ritter-Ordern published in 1728, this handcolored copperplate engraving brings history to life. It forms part of Robert von Spalart's Historical Picture collection depicting costumes worn during antiquity and the Middle Ages. Transporting us back to early 19th-century Europe, this image offers insight into German culture as well as glimpses into Turkish influences through references to Constantinople. It serves as a testament to the rich tapestry woven throughout European history. With meticulous attention to detail and expert craftsmanship evident in every stroke, this print invites us on a journey through time while celebrating the valorous spirit embodied by knights such as these.
