The Battle of Dybboel in the Second Schleswig War, on 18 April 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the intensity and devastation of "The Battle of Dybboel" during the Second Schleswig War. Published by Verlag A. Felgner in Berlin in 1864, this colour lithograph provides a vivid depiction of one of Denmark's most significant defeats. In November 1863, after Danish King Christian IX annexed the Duchy of Schleswig, Prussian and Austrian troops invaded Jutland. The battle at Dybboel became a turning point as Denmark suffered a severe defeat against Prussia, ultimately deciding the outcome of the war. The image showcases soldiers clad in their respective uniforms - Danish and German Confederation - engaged in fierce combat amidst billowing smoke and exploding artillery shells. The scene is chaotic yet meticulously detailed, capturing both moments of assault and defense. As casualties mount on both sides, wounded soldiers are seen being attended to by medical personnel amidst the chaos. This illustration serves as a reminder not only of the horrors endured by those involved but also highlights advancements made in medicine during wartime. Ultimately, this historic battle led to a peace treaty signed in October that transformed Schleswig and Holstein into an Austro-Prussian condominium – marking significant steps towards the formation of what would become known as the German Empire. This print from Bridgeman Images offers viewers an opportunity to reflect upon history while appreciating its artistic representation.
