EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of craftsmanship from the 16th century - a Conical Spoon Auger or Reamer made of wrought iron. Measuring an impressive 85.1 cm in length, this tool is part of the renowned David Russell Collection. The image reveals intricate details of this traditional woodworking implement used by wheelwrights during the Northern Renaissance period. The reamer features two cutting edges and was ingeniously inserted into a pre-drilled hole in a wheel nave. To shape the socket required for the axle-tree, a heavy weight would be suspended from the bottom hook while it was turned back and forth using a sturdy double arm attached to its tang. This conical spoon auger exemplifies the skill and precision involved in carpentry during that era. Its robust construction and functional design are evident even after centuries have passed since its creation. Bridgeman Images has expertly captured this historical artifact, allowing us to appreciate both its aesthetic beauty and practical purpose. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity throughout history, reminding us of our ancestors' dedication to their craft and their ability to create enduring tools that continue to inspire modern artisans today.
