Mars Exploration Rover

Mars Exploration Rover on the surface of Mars, artwork. The first of two identical NASA rovers, Spirit, landed on Mars on 4 January 2004. The second, Opportunity, landed on the other side of the planet on 24 January 2004. The rovers are powered by solar panels (black) and are mobile. Cameras mounted on the white mast give scientists panoramic views of the Martian surface. This enables them to instruct the rovers which rocks to analyse and where to look for water. Tools on board the golf buggy-sized rovers include spectrometers for analysing rock samples, a microscope and an abrasion tool. Each rover has a 90-day mission on the surface of Mars

Rust treatment Featured Print

Rust treatment

Rust treatment. Brush being used to apply a rust removing mix of chemicals to a rusty spanner. Many commercial mixes of chemicals are available to remove rust (iron oxide). Most of them use strong acids, so skin contact should be avoided. If left, the acids will also corrode the original metal, so the chemicals should be washed off soon after use. If the rust has only affected the surface, the appearance of the original metal can be restored. However, if the rust has deeply corroded the metal, then scars and pits will be left in the metal. The use of an oil or wax coating will help prevent future cases of rusting

Self-portrait of Curiosity rover on the surface of Mars

This self-portrait of NASA's Mars rover Curiosity combines dozens of exposures taken by the rover's Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) during the 177th Martian day, or sol, of Curiosity's work on Mars (February 3, 2013), plus three exposures taken during Sol 270 (May 10, 2013) to update the appearance of part of the ground beside the rover. The updated area, which is in the lower left quadrant of the image, shows gray-powder and two holes where Curiosity used its drill on the rock target John Klein.
The rover's robotic arm is not visible in the mosaic. MAHLI, which took the component images for this mosaic, is mounted on a turret at the end of the arm. Wrist motions and turret rotations on the arm allowed MAHLI to acquire the mosaic's component images. The arm was positioned out of the shot in the images, or portions of images, used in the mosaic
