EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting beauty of Haverholme Priory, a lost gem from England's architectural history. Taken by an English photographer in the 20th century, this image is part of Giles Worsley's book "England's Lost Houses" published in 2002. Haverholme Priory was founded in 1139 by Gilbert of Sempringham as the only English order of Cistercian monks. Over centuries, it underwent various transformations until it was purchased by George Finch-Hatton, the 10th Earl of Winchelsea, who rebuilt it in 1830. Sadly, this magnificent structure met its demise when it was demolished in 1927. The photograph showcases the priory's gothic revival architecture with its crenellated tower standing tall against the sky. The Victorian Gothic style exudes grandeur and elegance while hinting at a darker past. It serves as a testament to both the art movement and Victorian architecture prevalent during that era. Through this image, we are transported back to a time when Haverholme Priory stood proudly as a stately home amidst picturesque surroundings. Its destruction may have erased its physical presence but not its significance within history and culture. Bridgeman Images has preserved this moment for us to appreciate and reflect upon England's architectural heritage that once graced our landscapes.
